Man City flying but Chelsea and Arsenal still in title race, says Mahrez

The Etihad club’s forward refuses to write off the challenge of any of the teams in the Premier League’s top four

Riyad Mahrez says any of the top four teams can win the Premier League – despite Manchester City’s domination of the title race.

The champions and league leaders put further pressure on the chasing pack with their battling win at Watford on Tuesday night.

A 2-1 success put them five points clear of second-placed Liverpool and 10 in front of Chelsea in third ahead of Wednesday night’s action.

Mahrez, scorer of City’s second at Vicarage Road, will not write off his team’s rivals, however.

While Liverpool can close the gap to two points by winning at Burnley, when asked by CityTV about the gulf between the Etihad outfit and Chelsea, he said: “Of course, everyone in the top four can win the league.”

Pep Guardiola’s men held their nerve as Watford made a sustained late effort for an equaliser.

And Mahrez, 27, believes it was the kind of resilient – if not spectacular – performance that will stand City in good stead.

“You are not going to win every game 4-0 or 5-0. Going through these types of games makes you stronger,” added the Algerian.

“We played very well up until the second goal.

“After that we created more chances and tried to kill the game but in football when you are 2-0 up and the opposition score, the crowd get behind them and it’s difficult.

“We are very happy to win and get the three points.

“Now we need to focus every three days. We need to be ready and at our top. Anyone in the top four can still win the league.

“Nothing is done and we need to keep working very hard for each other and the team and trying to win every game.”

Chelsea visit Wolves, while fourth-placed Arsenal, 11 points behind City, face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Fifth-placed Tottenham, level on points with Arsenal, host Southampton.
